If you are not wanting or requiring more than what a single shot has to offer. a lot poorer!!Ĭontenders get honorable mention as well. casting and handloading present no issues. 41 mag and I have a Dan in 6" and a Smith in 8 3/8". If I was going to grab a handgun just to have along. 480 was no brainer as I am a confirmed caster and handloader. The ammo is everywhere as are components.įor me, moving up to the. and then the "best economy" probably lines up with the. especially when you consider I got dies, brass, ammo and bullets along with it and traded only my revolver and some ammo. 480!Ĭonsidering what I paid for the SRH in. 44 mag SRH off for a 7.5" in the 480 a couple of years ago. IIRC, my handloads hit 1100+ fps with 100 gr. It's LOTS of fun, and more potent that one may think. The other is a 32 H&R Single Six that I tote around in the woods. But I fell in love with this little Colt. And the Mark IIs and Buckmarks are fun as well. I can like my 22/45 (above next to 480 SBH)) as well. The Ruger Single 6 (sold mine) is still probably the best choice. Bisley Blackhawk Hunter:įor smaller game I am not as picky, and have 3 that I like. Simply because it is the best of both worlds. That said, if I could own only 1 factory made revolver for big game hunting, it would have to be this one (with a few slight modifications). I much prefer the old Colt, as do they, but a 44 mag isn't a bad thing either. A no drill and tap scope mount for the RUGER Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk that you can depend on. After owning one for well over a decade now, I happen to agree 110%. 45 Colt Caliber or 30 Carbine This scope mount does not fit Flat Top model RUGER This scope mount does not fit Hunter Model RUGER or 357 Maximum. However, without question, it has been said MANY, MANY, times over by guys like Ross Seyfried, John Linebaugh, Hamilton Bowen, (and more) that the Bisley Blackhawk in 45 Colt, is the single best factory hunting revolver in existence. You really have to spend a lot more to get better.Īs others have noted, I like my (480) Super Redhawk very much. 45 Colt with the larger cylinder frame is lighter.IMO, when you throw in the word "price", all signs point to Ruger. I tend to agree with him as the current ones, while they handle well, are a bit heavy. Since they have steel grip frames suggested that Ruger might lighten them up some by making those grips aluminum like the standard Blackhawks. The standard model gets frisky when you load it near to Elmer's old loads! That original XR3 grip, while it feels great in the hand, might bite your knuckle a bit when you ramp up the loads.īrian Pearce did at least one and maybe two articles on these with good load recommendations. Got a 4 5/8" standard model and a 5 1/2" Bisley, both blued. However, the stainless models are a limited Lipsey's run, those are pretty neat. Some dealers on gunbroker are still trying to play the "limited production" card to justify their prices but MSRP is the same as any other blued Blackhawk so street prices should be in the mid $400 range as well. After Lipsey's first run was so successful Ruger saw the light and added them to the regular lineup. These are regular cataloged production handguns. They are bringing a little bit of a price premium, but are well worth the money! Buy one & use & enjoy it! Ole Elmer would be proud! You can still find some of the Ruger/Lipseys Flattops on Gunbroker from time to time. And thanks to ole Elmer Keith, we have the famed. You will also enjoy John Taffin's & Hamiton Bowen's books on Sixguns, if you like Elmer.īy the way, Elmer was known to have blown up several old Colt Sixguns in 44sp & 45LC while developing the "Perfect" hunting handgun. Great Feral Hog medicine & I've shot a truck load of them here at the ranch using that combo.Īfter you finish reading Keith's Sixguns, you need to get and read his other book, called "Hell I Was There" 44 special with a Keith semi-wadcutter going about 1100 fps. If I'm toting my Winchester 94 16" Trapper in.44 mag, I load it & the Flattop. It's the most accurate of all my Flattops,& it will put 5 Keith 44 Semi-wadcutters into a 1.5" group 25 yards off of a sandbag. My favorite gun that I use the most here around the ranch is the 45lc Convertable Flattop in polished Stainless with Ivory grips.

I shoot them with Keith semi-waddcutter cast bullets going around 950 fps. They are ALL very accurate & they handle & feel more like my original Colts. 44sp, 44 mag, 41mag, & 45 colt with the extra. I've got several of Ruger's limited run Flattops.
